Plumbing mistakes are expensive. A wrongly sized pipe, a low-quality fitting, or a missed joint can mean waterlogging, seepage into walls, and repair costs that far exceed what you saved by buying cheap materials.
If you’re building or renovating in Iritty or Kannur, this guide covers every plumbing material you need — the right brands, the right specs, and what your plumber should be installing.

In Kerala homes, three pipe types are used for different purposes. Using the wrong type is one of the most common plumbing errors:
| Pipe Type | Full Form | Use For | Temperature Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPVC | Chlorinated PVC | Hot and cold water inside walls | Up to 93°C |
| UPVC | Unplasticized PVC | Cold water supply only | Up to 60°C |
| SWR PVC | Soil Waste & Rainwater | Drainage only — never supply | Not for supply lines |
Critical rule for Kerala homes: Always use CPVC for lines connected to your geyser or solar water heater. UPVC deforms under hot water and causes joint failures.
| Pipe Size | Common Use |
|---|---|
| 15mm (½ inch) | Final connections to taps, showers, flush tanks |
| 20mm (¾ inch) | Branch lines within bathrooms and kitchens |
| 25mm (1 inch) | Main distribution lines inside home |
| 32mm (1¼ inch) | Main line from overhead tank to house |
| 40mm–63mm | Underground mains and sump connections |
| 75mm–110mm (SWR) | Drainage, soil pipes, rainwater downpipes |
| Home Size | Approx. CPVC/UPVC Pipe | Approx. SWR Pipe |
|---|---|---|
| 2 bathroom home (1000 sq ft) | 150–200 metres | 50–70 metres |
| 3 bathroom home (1500 sq ft) | 200–280 metres | 70–100 metres |
| 4 bathroom home (2000 sq ft) | 280–380 metres | 100–130 metres |
1. Using UPVC pipe for hot water lines
UPVC bends and deforms when hot water from a geyser flows through it. The joints fail within 2–3 years. Always use CPVC for any line that carries or may carry hot water.
2. Not installing shutoff valves for each bathroom
If one bathroom has a leak, you should be able to isolate it without cutting water to the entire house. Every branch line needs a ball valve.
3. No slope on drainage pipes
Horizontal drainage pipes must have a minimum slope of 1:80 (1.25%) toward the outlet. No slope means waste accumulates and causes blockages.
4. Mixing pipe brands in CPVC systems
Different brands have slightly different pipe outer diameters. Mixing Astral pipes with non-Astral fittings causes loose joints that leak. Use the same brand throughout.
5. Overhead tank too small
In Kerala, water supply interruptions during summer are common. An overhead tank should hold at least 1 day’s water requirement — for a family of 4, that’s a minimum 1000 litre tank.
Which is better — CPVC or UPVC for Kerala homes?
Use CPVC for all supply lines inside the house. It handles both hot and cold water. UPVC is fine for underground mains where hot water will never flow.
Which water tank size is right for my home?
For a family of 4 in Kerala, a 1000–1500 litre overhead tank is standard. Add an underground sump of at least 3000 litres if you’re on a borewell or tanker water supply.
